To ensure the sterility, potency and quality of your product — especially when oxygen, moisture or very cold conditions are a concern — we can assess your package’s headspace via laser-based analysis techniques. Laser-based analysis provides a quantitative, nondestructive measure of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapor or internal pressure in a nonporous, rigid or non-rigid package’s headspace. We pass a near-infrared diode laser light through the gas headspace region of the sealed package, then use sensitive frequency-modulated spectroscopy to measure light absorption that indicates gas concentration and pressure.

Because headspace analysis is nondestructive, it may be performed repeatedly over time to provide a quantitative measure of a sample’s leak rate. This technology is especially applicable when verifying the integrity of packages that must maintain a specific gas headspace content due to oxygen- or moisture-sensitive product, for example. In addition, we can apply this technology to assess leakage that may occur during ultra-cold or cryogenic storage resulting from conditions below the glass-transition temperature of packaging components.

We perform laser-based headspace analysis on transparent (colorless) or semi-transparent (amber) packages. These packages must possess a minimum headspace volume and headspace path length. Our experts recommend this approach for vials, syringes, cartridges and bottles.
